Frida Fashion

Those were a few of my favorite pages from the book Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress: The Fashion of Frida Kahlo.  I'm fascinated by the fact that after her death, Frida's husband Diego Rivera sealed up her dressing room and bathroom in her home Casa Azul, with the stipulation that they could only be explored after 50 years had passed.  The doors were unlocked in 2004 and, among other things, historians found Frida's extensive collection of handmade dresses, linens, and accessories.  What a thrilling moment that must have been to open a time capsule that revealed so much about Frida as a woman and the inspiration she found in local, traditional garments.
